This above view of the Leatherman's Cave was taken Thursday, March 25, 2021 by Paul Wetmore Jr., of the West Rock Ridge Advisory Council. Paul and his brother-in-law, Hamden Fire Chief Gary Merwede, hiked their way to the cave, which is on land that was deeded to the Hamden Historical Society years ago by Burton Dickerman and his deceased brothers Howard and Clifford.

This view from inside the cave was taken earlier this year, on January 7th, when Paul finally found his way to the not-so-easy-to-locate Leatherman's Cave, via a trail off Cobblestone Drive. He was on a mission.
The West Rock Ridge Advisory Council had recently acquired private property on Paradise Avenue that is adjacent to the Society's Leatherman's Cave property. To reach the Cave without going onto private property visitors had to hike via a trail off Cobblestone Drive - a trail that can be very difficult to navigate.
Paul and the Advisory Council were hoping to make things a lot easier for Leatherman Cave visitors by creating a trail on their newly-acquired property that is adjacent to ours.
Paul spoke at the February meeting of the Society's Board of Directors requesting permission to create a new Leatherman's Cave trail, on their land and ours, with a Paradise Avenue approach that would be much easier to traverse than the Society's trail off Cobblestone Drive. The Society was only to happy to grant that permission, which will make getting to the cave somewhat easier for all.
